A native PlayStation Vita port of Halo: Combat Evolved, built from the decompilation of the Xbox game. It is not an emulator: the game's own code is compiled for the Vita's ARM processor, and its Direct3D rendering is translated to the Vita's GPU.

**Halo CE for PS Vita 1.1.0.** The first stable 1.1 release. Your maps, saves and settings carry over from 1.0.3 and every 1.1.0 beta: install `halo.vpk` with VitaShell over your current Halo CE.
**Vita to Vita online is still network version 18**, so 1.1.0 plays with betas 1–3. Please update anyway.
## Install
**Already on 1.0.3 or a 1.1.0 beta?** Install this `halo.vpk` with VitaShell over your current Halo CE.
**New install:**
1. You need a Vita or PS TV on HENkaku/Ensō with [VitaShell](https://github.com/TheOfficialFloW/VitaShell/releases), `ur0:data/libshacccg.suprx` (run [ShaRKF00D](https://github.com/Rinnegatamante/ShaRKF00D/releases) once if it's missing), about 1.5 GB free, and your own **Xbox** copy of Halo: Combat Evolved.
2. Run `HaloCEVitaInstaller.exe` (attached), or copy the `maps` folder and `default.xbe` from your Xbox disc image (extract it with [extract-xiso](https://github.com/XboxDev/extract-xiso)) to `ux0:data/haloce-vita/` yourself.
3. Install `halo.vpk` with VitaShell.
4. **For online play, also install the Halo Custom Edition map files:** `bitmaps.map`, `sounds.map` and `loc.map` from Halo PC. Without them you get the Xbox menus only (no server browser, Create Game > Internet or crossplay). Either:
- copy the free Halo Custom Edition installer (`halocesetup_en_1.00.exe`, for example from [HaloMaps](https://www.halomaps.org/hce/detail.cfm?fid=410)) to `ux0:data/haloce-vita/` without running it, and the game takes the 3 files out of it on its next start;
- or copy the 3 files from Halo MCC on Steam (`halo1/maps/custom_edition/`) or from a Halo Custom Edition install to `ux0:data/haloce-vita/maps/`;
- or let `HaloCEVitaInstaller.exe` do it.
Then set **Multiplayer > Connection** to **Online** in the settings panel (**Select + D-pad down**) and restart the game.
## What's new since beta 3
### Crossplay with PC (experimental)
- **New Crossplay switch** (settings panel > Multiplayer). On: your Vita joins PC games and servers running **OpenCE** or **ChupathingyCE** (network version 29, their builds from Oct 14 on). Off: Vita to Vita, as before.
- With Crossplay on, the Vita only joins; it doesn't host. Big PC games (more than 16 players) ask once before you join.
- Custom Edition maps: you need the same map as the host in your `maps` folder. If yours is a different version, the game says so.
- PC co-op works too, marked experimental.
- Tested in a 32-player PC game: about 25 fps (20–29).
- DamnationCE servers can't be joined until DamnationCE moves to network version 29.
### Gameplay
- **First-person legs:** look down and you see Master Chief's legs (settings panel > Graphics, on by default).
- **Bots got a lot smarter:** they drive Warthogs, Ghosts and Scorpions, take teleporters when it's shorter, pick vantage points, play objectives better, and you can set up a playlist of bot games.
- Co-op: completed levels are saved to every local profile; the camera no longer flies off the map at the start of a co-op level.
- Cutscene lip sync matches the sound again on the performance profiles.
### Online
- **Our own message server** (on the same machine as our dedicated servers) comes first, so the server browser keeps working when the free public ones go down ([#42](https://github.com/BirchWoodGod/halo-ce-vita/issues/42)).
- Server browser: scrolling for long lists, and joining a game from the browser joins it straight away.
- New modes on our dedicated servers: SWAT and Team Snipers.
- Map share is safer: downloads are checked more strictly, and a shared map's menus can't host, join or touch your profiles.
### Updates
- **Download updates in the game** (settings panel > General > Check for updates). The game downloads the new `halo.vpk` and checks it against our signature before keeping it in `ux0:data/haloce-vita/update/`; then install it with VitaShell. Nothing is installed for you.
- Update channel: **Stable** (releases) or **Experimental** (betas too). 1.1.0 starts on Stable, including if you're coming from a beta.
### Fixes
- Crashes fixed:
- a player leaving with a grenade or rocket still live could crash the host or server;
- heavily scripted Custom Edition maps (coldsnap) crashed on load;
- several crafted-map crashes (vehicle lists, camera tracks, collision models);
- several rare crashes from the render thread reading things the game had just removed (vehicle seats in the HUD, weapon HUD and more).
- Long Custom Edition music plays to the end.
- Fixes and hardening ported from [OpenCE](https://github.com/OpenCommunityEdition/OpenCE), [ChupathingyCE](https://github.com/ChupathingyCE/chupathingyce) and [DamnationCE](https://github.com/xshxdex98/DamnationCE), thanks to all three. That includes zlib's CVE-2002-0059 fix for map downloads.
### Also new
- **Settings panel:** **Select + D-pad down** opens it instantly (holding Select + Start still works) ([#44](https://github.com/BirchWoodGod/halo-ce-vita/issues/44)). Controls is now **General** and holds the version and update check; the Graphics tab is reorganised.
- Profiles: all three use dynamic resolution (Performance from 50%, Balanced from 63%, Quality from 75%).
- Faster: cheaper AI line of sight and path search, draw records and big-game client updates.
## What to test
- Crossplay: join OpenCE and ChupathingyCE servers and PC co-op games. How long does the lobby take with a Custom Edition map?
- Long co-op sessions as host.
- Bots on every map, with vehicles and teleporters.
- The in-game update download once 1.1.1 is out.
