VLC for PS5 changelog

v0.6.0 · Oct 21, 2026

v0.6.0

What's new

  • Redesign by Juxtopposed, a whole new look next to Modern and Classic (Settings › Interface › Look):
  • Dark and Light themes (Settings › Interface › Theme)
  • Choose your look again: the first time v0.6 starts, you can pick Modern, Redesign by Juxtopposed or Classic (once)
  • Equalizer bands: Preamp and 10 bands from 31 Hz to 16 kHz, −20 to +20 dB each. Pick a preset, then move any band: it becomes your own Custom sound, saved
  • Volume on the player bar: move to the speaker,
  • ↑ ↓ change it, ✕ mutes
  • Controller vibration: when you switch tabs, change settings, change the volume,
  • Turn it off in Settings › Interface › Controller vibration

Changed

  • In Modern and Classic, the Audio button on the player bar has a new icon (the speaker is now the volume)

v0.5.0 · Oct 20, 2026

v0.5.0

What's new

  • Upscaling (Settings › Video › Upscaling, or Picture during a video). Off by default:
  • EWA Lanczos Sharp: the most natural look, the best plain scaler
  • AMD FSR: sharp and the fastest
  • FSRCNNX: a neural network upscaler for films and shows, restores fine detail
  • Anime4K: made for anime, clean and sharp lines. It uses its heaviest, best mode, and only steps to a lighter one for a video the PS5 can't keep up
  • Video details for files on network shares: Details now shows a share file's resolution, codecs, tracks and size and much more

Fixed

  • Files on SMB shares and in M3U lists stayed in software decoding after hardware decoding was turned back on

v0.4.6 · Oct 18, 2026

v0.4.6

Fixed

  • Turning hardware decoding back on didn't apply to a paused live channel until it was opened again.
  • Zip, RAR and 7z files on a network share played like a video instead of opening like a folder.

v0.4.5 · Oct 18, 2026

v0.4.5

Hardware decoding for VP9, a much better search, and a big round of fixes.

What's new

  • VP9 hardware decoding: 4K VP9 videos now play on the PS5's video chip, 8-bit and 10-bit (HDR).
  • Search everything, as you type: your videos, music, playlists, network shares and recent links, plus every free TV channel (11,000+) and radio stations by name. Results show up while you type and play straight from the list, from anywhere in the app (R3, or Options › Search, also during a video)
  • Match frame rate (Off by default): films at 23.976, 24, 25 or 50 fps switch the TV to that refresh while they play, on TVs that accept those modes. Some TVs go black for a moment when they switch
  • Faster software decoding: videos the PS5's chip doesn't take (AV1, MPEG-2 TV channels, some VP9) no longer get an extra resize on the CPU for every picture
  • Faster downloads for live TV: each video segment is fetched over several connections at once
  • Open a network link moved to Browse, next to "Add a network share"

Fixed

  • Crash when opening Free TV channels in Browse after searching
  • IPTV stutter and sound out of sync on some 1080i channels with hardware decoding (#11): interlaced TV is now timed and deinterlaced correctly
  • Search always said "Nothing found" in the Free TV list (#12)
  • Leaving a live channel froze the next video for up to 10 s
  • A frame from another video flashing at the start of some videos with hardware decoding
  • Stutter on VP9 videos with hardware decoding
  • A 4K HDR video staying black the first time it was opened after other videos
  • Small TV channels (below 1080p) now use the hardware decoder too
  • HTTPS streams no longer retry the console's secure connection on every segment when it refuses a server
  • The screen froze for 1–3 s when VLC switched a video between hardware and software decoding
  • Portrait videos flashed stretched over the whole screen for their first frames
  • Hardware decoding sometimes off for H.264 and HEVC, and VP9 refused after an HEVC film
  • A memory leak in large memory blocks (long sessions got slower)

Install

  1. Extract PPSA85300.zip and copy the PPSA85300 folder to /data/homebrew/.
  2. Run kstuff and ShadowMountPlus.
  3. Start VLC from the home screen.
  4. Add your media on a USB drive, or /data/vlc/, also from your phone or pc.

Optional full access. With etaHEN, OnionHEN or the Helper, VLC can lift its sandbox. This gives it all of /data and USB drives plugged in while it runs. download helper.elf

v0.4 · Oct 10, 2026

v0.4

What's new

  • Hardware decoding: H.264 and HEVC (8 and 10-bit) now play on the PS5, up to 4K. Heavy files that stuttered before, like 4K HDR films at 70+ Mbit/s, now play smoothly with the CPU almost idle. Everything else (AV1, VP9, MPEG-2, VC-1, DVDs…) still plays as before.
  • HDR10 output: on an HDR TV, HDR10 and HLG videos now go out as real HDR.
  • HDR on an SDR TV: HDR videos are now tone mapped, with natural colours instead of the grey, washed-out (#8)
  • Dolby Vision films play as their HDR10 base layer instead of failing
  • Opus audio in MKV, WebM and MP4 now plays (#7)
  • Faster network shares (SMB): videos start sooner and high-bitrate files keep up much better

Fixed

  • Black screen with some 4K HDR videos (#9), most often over SMB
  • Jumping (±10 s, seeking) in MP4 files didn't resume
  • The whole app froze for seconds when a stream (IPTV) was stuck and you opened something else. The next video now just starts once you leave.
  • Classic / Modern look switching by itself after a restart (with full access, VLC could pick up another copy's settings)

Notes

  • HDR output needs HDR set to "On When Supported" or "Always On" in the PS5's Screen and Video settings, and a TV/monitor input that accepts HDR.
  • Optional switches in settings.txt in the app folder:
  • hw_decode=0: software decoding only
  • hdr_output=0: never switch the TV to HDR (tone map instead) ·
  • hdr_output=2: switch even if the PS5 doesn't report an HDR TV

Install

This gives it all of /data and USB drives plugged in while it runs. download helper.elf

v0.3.1 · Oct 10, 2026

v0.3.1

Fixed

  • No sound on Dolby TrueHD tracks: videos whose main track is TrueHD (common on Blu-ray rips) played silently, while their AC3 and DTS tracks worked
  • IPTV picture zooming in after a while: when a stream changed its quality or picture shape, the picture kept the old shape and couldn't be fixed. It now follows the stream
  • A memory error in IPTV and other streaming (HLS) playback that could make VLC unstable
  • No more "can't keep up" false alarms right after adding a subtitle

Install

This gives it all of /data and USB drives plugged in while it runs. download helper.elf

v0.3 · Oct 9, 2026

VLC PS5 v0.3

Fixes Blu-ray menus, subtitles from anywhere, and VLC moves to the Media tab.

What's new

  • Disc menu and Pop-up menu: in Tracks › Playback while a DVD or Blu-ray plays, to go back to the disc's menu, or open a Blu-ray's pop-up menu over the film
  • Blu-ray region: Settings › Playback › Blu-ray region (A, B or C), for discs that only play in their region. It starts from your language; change it if a disc says it can't play
  • Add any subtitle file: Tracks › Subtitles › Add a subtitle file opens Browse, so you can pick a subtitle from the media folder, a USB drive or a network share, for any video
  • Subtitles found everywhere: a subtitle next to the video with the same name (Movie.srt, Movie.en.srt, Movie - English.ass, or in a Subs folder) now loads by itself from network shares and links too, not only from USB
  • Subtitles in any language's encoding: older subtitle files saved as Chinese (GBK, Big5), Japanese, Korean, Russian, Arabic, Turkish, Polish or Western European text now show the right letters instead of garbage
  • VLC is in the Media tab of the home screen.

Fixed

  • DLNA media servers weren't found when VLC runs without full access (no Helper): the console already uses the port DLNA listens on, and VLC gave up. It now finds servers by asking for them
  • Subtitles inside videos (SRT tracks in MKV files) and .srt files didn't show at all on the PS5. Styled .ass subtitles were never affected
  • The bottom of the picture was cut off on some videos (1024x560, 720x368 and other sizes that aren't a multiple of 16)
  • Blu-ray menus didn't react to the D-pad or ✕
  • A Blu-ray's menu could reopen the disc in fast decoding and lose your place in the menus
  • A false "can't keep up" right after resuming from pause or adding a subtitle
  • A subtitle from a network share could show up twice in Tracks when you opened the same video again
  • Adding a subtitle from a network share froze the picture for half a second

Install

This gives it all of /data and USB drives plugged in while it runs. download helper.elf

v0.2 · Oct 9, 2026

VLC PS5 v0.2

What's new

  • DVDs from your network: DVD images (.iso or .img) on a PC or NAS share now play as real DVDs, with their menus, chapters, length and seeking, just like from a USB drive
  • Disc menus you can use right away: the D-pad and ✕ press the menu's buttons as soon as it shows. The touchpad brings up the player controls over a menu, and in the film ✕ pauses as usual
  • Real chapters on DVDs: the film's own chapters, with marks on the progress bar and L1 / R1 to jump between them
  • IPTV and radio channel lists: open any M3U or PLS list (from a share, a USB drive, the Playlists tab or a link you type) and pick a channel from it, with the names from the list, in the list's own order
  • Channel lists in Playlists: lists with links open as a channel list and show how many channels they have
  • Smarter HTTPS: when a server doesn't work with the console's own secure connection, VLC's takes over for that link only

Fixed

  • A crash when a stream's server redirected it to another address
  • DVD and Blu-ray menus didn't react to the D-pad for ISOs opened from a share
  • DVD images from a share played as one long video with no length or seeking
  • M3U files on a share were hidden, and opening one showed nothing
  • Playlists with links looked empty and counted 0

Notes

  • Blu-ray menus made with Java (BD-J), used by most commercial Blu-rays, can't be shown on the PS5: those discs skip the menu and play the movie. Simpler HDMV menus work.
  • Encrypted (CSS) DVD images aren't supported; unprotected ones and most ripped ISOs are.
  • DVDs don't store chapter names, so their chapters are called Chapter 1, Chapter 2...; Blu-rays and videos with named chapters show their names.
  • .img files that aren't DVD images (hard disk or game images) can't be played.
  • Online .m3u8 links play directly: they're live streams, not channel lists.

Install

  1. Extract PPSA85300.zip and copy the PPSA85300 folder to /data/homebrew/.
  2. Run kstuff and ShadowMountPlus.
  3. Start VLC from the home screen.
  4. Add your media on a USB drive, or /data/vlc/, also from your phone.

Optional full access. With etaHEN, OnionHEN or the Helper, VLC can lift its sandbox. This gives it all of /data and USB drives plugged in while it runs. download helper.elf
