Universal-Updater changelog

This release fixes an odd bug from v3.4.0 where the metadata file (containing marks and the update status of apps) stopped saving, thanks @syndenbock for the report! I also fixed a bug I'd noticed where Universal-Updater could crash if you exited while a thread was running. Italian and Russian translations have also been updated, thanks to everyone who's helped with translations!

Proxy users rejoice! One of the oldest issues on the tracker that no one had had the motivation to test properly, proxies should now be fully supported. Universal-Updater also now checks for what you have installed on your system and shows it with a little icon by the app icon. This lets you filter to easily find apps you already have installed or if you've got a lot on your system you can now flip the filters and instead show only new apps!

Features

• Universal-Updater now tracks installed apps (displayed by an SD card icon) and this can be used for filtering! (Thanks @TrianguloY for the icon!)
• NOTE: The tracking is done by title ID and file path so conflicting apps will be displayed even if not installed (ex. HBL forks)

• By default the system proxy will be used as HTTP, but other types of proxies supported by curl can be set in settings

Changes

• The SSL CA certificate bundle will now be loaded from the SD card instead of ROMFS
• Uses the location from Luma3DS (sdmc:/config/ssl/cacert.pem)
• Other homebrew desiring SSL peer verification are encouraged to use that location too, Universal-Updater will ensure it exists and is valid on load
• NOTE: Updating the CA certificate bundle on console in this way is technically a security hole as you're downloading your source of trust from an unverified host... that said, its 3DS homebrew, its not that big a deal; but get the file manually from Luma3DS or curl if worried
• Users are now presented with the option to disable peer verification if they really don't want to fix their system date or update their certificate bundle
• Universal-Updater now waits for a Wi-Fi connection on startup, previously it was possible to have the initial UniStore download fail if your 3DS was still trying to establish the connection
• The "select UniStore" menu now loads the UniStore list in a separate thread making for a more responsive menu
• A spinner is now shown when Universal-Updater is doing something in the background but user input is possible
• This is intended to draw attention to the fact that something can happen if you wait (or perform an outside action like syncing the time) and that skipping is not your only option
• Updated for latest libctru

Bug fixes

• Fixed the list view cutting off one item when under 4 exist
• Universal-Updater now has the correct app title on the HOME Menu
• The update check (used for most internet sanity checks too) now pulls from Universal-DB instead of the GitHub API, hopefully reducing confusing errors

Not a particularly interesting release this one, but it fixes the crashes some new users were getting when Universal-Updater tried to display its changelog on first load up if Universal-DB hadn't downloaded successfully.

A much smaller release than the last one, but with some nice changes nonetheless.

New features

• Much improved search menu
• I had always intended to make the search menu have buttons or dropdowns or the like for the Categories and Consoles values, well it took a hot minute but now it's here!
• You can also search on descriptions now, by default searches now search both title or description, but you can disable either of them
• (@Epicpkmn11 and @Sorunome) SSL validity is now actually checked and respected
• Previously while we fully supported SSL for encryption, we had certificate validation disabled leaving MITM attacks possible
• Minor downside is that web requests will now properly fail if your date is set significantly off, but this is easy to fix from Luma3DS's Rosalina menu
• Several menus that previously required using the buttons to scroll are now fully controllable on the touch screen by scrolling on tapping the first or last item in the list
• Prompt messages now automatically wrap text and support scrolling!
• Added a warning on start if the connection times out that you probably have an incompatible custom DNS
• Replaced our old practice of uploading commit builds to a dedicated repository with uploading them to a 'git' release on this repo
• This makes them easier to find and fixes some buggy behaviour when using the git build auto-update feature in app
• We have also changed the nomenclature from 'nightly builds' to 'git builds' as it better reflects the technical reality

Bug fixes

• Fixed sleep mode!
• Universal-Updater used to block sleep mode despite it not actually keeping an internet connection so battery was wasted for no reason; now sleep is only blocked while the queue is running and downloads actually work! (your console will finish all downloads and installs then go to sleep)
• Fixed visual regression in v3.3.0 that made the install confirmation unhelpfully always ask if you're sure you want to install the first entry rather than the selected one
• Made it so the install confirmation prompt is never skipped for nightlies and pre-releases

It's been just over a year since the last update and this one's turned out to actually be a pretty big one! To be honest I think I intended to get this release out like two or three times earlier in the year, but now it's a holiday present! :p

Also, I finally got around to processing all the app requests to Universal-DB!! I'm really sorry it took so long, but I put some time into a new [webpage form][app-request] that made the process much easier. I'll try to keep up now.

• @alvinhochun and @Epicpkmn11: Added a new menu that lets you open app wikis in the 3DS browser or on your phone with a QR code (the 3DS browser is on its last legs afterall...)

What's new?

• Added an indicator for your Wi-Fi strength and if you're connected
• The download list is now sorted case insensitively such that the [nightly] versions always appear below the normal versions now
• Added an option to automatically update to the latest nightly version of Universal-Updater instead of just stable releases

• Removed the message variable from scripts, allowing for translations and smaller file sizes
• The rmdir action will now fail silently if not required and the folder doesn't exist, allowing to ensure a folder doesn't exist without having to ensure it exists first

What's new?

• Now when you select something to download it'll just add it into the queue to download in the background so you can continue using the rest of the app while it installs!
• You can also now add all items from the current search / filter into the queue at once from the Search and Filters tab
• When something is installed for the first time now it'll add an SD card icon next to the installed entry, only entries with the SD card icon will be updated when using this
• When filtering you can now choose whether to only show items that match all of the selected filters or anything that matches any filter
• The current time and battery level are now shown on the top bar
• You can now set a custom location for FIRMs to be installed to
• You can now choose to install 3DSX files inside a folder of the same name instead of directly to the set folder
• You can now cancel installs and it'll clean up the current step and stop
• Portuguese (Portugal) has be re-enabled as it's now mostly translated
• Added themes (currently only two preset ones, custom will likely come soon™)

• Fixed a crash on trying to write a negative amount to a file if an error occurred while extracting

This is just a little update with a single bug fix, but it's a pretty important bug fix. For a while 7z extraction has just been randomly failing sometimes and we figured out it was due to the 2013 version of libarchive devkitPro provides, but we weren't exactly sure how to get the latest version working, we finally did so here's a little update.

The updated pkgbuild patches are at Epicpkmn11/pacman-packages, I would PR them to devkitPro's, but we're all banned so I can't. If anyone at devkitPro wants to upstream those changes please do. I will note though I have basically no idea what I'm doing when it comes to porting libraries, so please report any extraction problems and if upstreaming you may want to check if I did anything really dumb ;P

• Shortcuts: When using the homebrew launcher you can now create shortcuts for easily updating specific apps
• Screenshots: You can now see what apps look like before downloading!
• Note: Only around a fifth of Universal-DB has screenshots at the moment, more will be added as we get around to it
• Sizes: Downloads can now have a size so you know how big they'll be
• Songs: You can now use a WAV file up to 10 MiB as background music, place it at sdmc:/3ds/Universal-Updater/music.wav
• Safety: Universal-Updater now has parental controls set, at the same level as the homebrew launcher and FBI, so you don't have to worry about kids messing with it
• Stores: There's now a list of of recommended UniStores accessible from the select UniStore menu so you don't even need to find a QR code or enter a URL
• setoN: Okay fine, finally out of S words... but there's still more! You can now view the release Notes for apps so you know what's changed!
• Added Ukrainian
• Added custom font support, the font at sdmc:/3ds/Universal-Updater/font.bcfnt will be used when enabled
• A default extended font will be downloaded on selecting Ukrainian as the default font is missing some letters
• Toggle icons now have color when on to be more clear
• Portuguese (Portugal), Lithuanian, and Danish have been removed for now due to lack of translations, however if anyone helps translate they will be added back

Bug fixes:

• Fixed an out of bounds access
• Fix grid scrolling sometimes going too far
• Fixed crashing when staring Universal-Updater without Wi-Fi
• Double new lines no longer break wrapped text (fixed by Citro2D v1.5.0)

Universal-Updater v3.0.0 is here with a complete overhaul to the app! Everything has been thought through and redesigned with the goal of making using Universal-Updater a much simpler and more intuitive experience.

Now when loading Universal-Updater it immediately opens the last used UniStore, by default Universal-DB, and from there you can see all the apps on the top screen and the bottom now has separate tabs for information, downloads, search, sort, and settings while still keeping the app list active on the top screen. The graphics have also been redone to give a cleaner and more modern feel.

Searching and filtering have also been improved, you can now mark apps and filter to just show apps with specific marks and/or only apps that have updates available. Searching is now case-insensitive and you can edit the filters and the search without having to dig through menus.

The old "scripts" have been dropped completely in favor of just UniStores, but no functionality is lost here as all of the apps that could be downloaded with the official scripts are now on Universal-DB and even ones with complex installation processes like TWiLight Menu++ still work correctly, plus update tracking and more information.

A couple notes:

• To UniStore creators: All existing UniStores will needed to be updated to version 3, check out the wiki for more information.
• If updating from a previous version and you get an error that the UniStore is invalid:

1. Go to Settings
2. Go to Select UniStore
3. Press the update icon at the bottom on the UniStore
4. Press <kbd>A</kbd> on the UniStore

v2.5.1 is mainly a bug fix release.

What got fixed?

• Fix Config causing a return to the Home Menu / Homebrew Launcher. (On first start of v2.5.1, the config get wiped! So make sure to note all your current Config stuff.)

What got added?

• Add %3DSX%, %NDS% and %ARCHIVE_DEFAULT%. With that, updated scripts can now declare %3DSX%/Universal-Updater.3dsx for example and it will use the 3DSX path from the config file instead!
• Add "Special Thanks" page on the credits.

What got changed?

• Make download Speed Display disabled on default, cause it can potential cause crashes. If you really want to have it enabled, change SHOW_SPEED to true in the config. No support for those crashes will be given though.
• Don't display "update available" for apps that haven't been installed from that UniStore.
• Remove FTP, cause FTP is not the focus of Universal-Updater. Use FTPD for it instead.

v2.5.0 is the next major release of Universal-Updater!

What got added?

• Display splash screen on first startup!

• Initial Script-Creator! (You can now create scripts within Universal-Updater, but it could possibly have issues, so feel free to report them, if you found any. The Script-Creator is mostly english only for this release.)

• UniStore v2! (This is an improved UniStore version, which contains 2 Layouts (Grid and List), searching for specific entries, sorting and more! Only Universal DB does support it right now and backwards compatibility stays, so UniStore v1 can be used as well!)

• Universal DB got added! (This is a 3DS & NDS Homebrew database, which is also available here as a site format. You can find it next to the TinyDB button under "UniStore" -> "Store search".)

• Added Polish Translation.

• Press Left/Right to scroll a page on Script list, UniStore etc.

• Show download speed on download operations.

• Make the progressbar optional.

• Some more improvements.

Notes

• Added warn message, that TinyDB might be down and causes "Download Failed!". This is not an Universal-Updater fault!

• If you want to use UniStore v2, change "version" under "storeInfo" to 2. UniStore v2 does not use the same Format as UniStore v1! Keep that in mind!!

Known issues

• Some archives might have issues due to 3ds-libarchive using a 2013 version of libarchive.

This Release rewrites the whole UniStore Structure to use an Array, which allows for sorting the Entries for their importantness.

What's new?

• Add a TinyDB Button to the Store Search function, to make getting TinyDB easier.
• Ask for an update on every Store launch, so you could have an up-to-date store anyways.
• TinyDB support has been fully added! So no more temporarely my placeholder file!

Every Store needs to be rewritten! Older stores will cause an exception or something if i remember correctly. Sorry about that.

This is the second major release of Universal-Updater!

What has been added / changed?

• Add a Script Browse, so you can download Scripts from our repo!
• Add a new param for the downloadRelease Function: includeprerelease.
• Add a new Script Function called timeMsg.
• Display the Version properly by the MainMenu now.
• Add the ability, to change the Scripts Path. (You need to manually change that in the Settings.ini file.)

Because of 2 newly added Languages, you may need to change the Language in the Language Screen again.
