About Netsurf 3DS

The 3DS's own browser stops at TLS 1.1 and mangles a lot of pages. This port handles TLS 1.2 and supports HTML and CSS. JavaScript is switched off, SVG and WebP don't work yet, and you can't download files to the SD card yet.

You also need the resources.zip package from the releases page, extracted to /share/netsurf on the SD card. It won't run properly without it.

Type file:/// as the address to browse the SD card and open text, HTML and image files. nsfb_himem.cia runs in the 80MB high-memory mode.

Text often gets cut off or wraps wrong, bigger images distort while you scroll, and you can't view a site's certificate. The author doesn't expect it to ever play YouTube or run web apps like Google Docs or Discord.

Release notes

v0.03 · CIA and RomFS support · Dec 23, 2025

Changelog

There are a few updates in this release:

  1. RomFS Support - resources will now be loaded from the app's own RomFS instead of from /share/netsurf on your SD card, meaning no more confusing zipfile extraction!
  2. CIA support - NetSurf now has two CIA builds - nsfb.cia is the normal browser, while nsfb_himem.cia uses the 3DS's extended memory mode, allowing NetSurf to use 80MB of memory instead of 64MB, at the cost of longer boot times.
