v1.1 · May 1, 2008
Your Sony PlayStation Portable as a map. Yes, that's the goal of coder Royale with the homebrew application PSP-Maps, a reader which retrieves location charts from Google Maps.
Previous builds have already incorporated support for the Danzeff Keyboard and Google Moon, Mars, and Sky. Today brings us to version 1.1 where coder Royale adds two more changes. Check it straight from Royale's log:
version 1.1 (2008-05-01)
- added experimental and basic KML files support
- removed the buggy Google Moon visible view
KML is short for Keyhole Markup Language which allows you to express geographic annotation and visualization on 2D or 3D Earth browsers such as Google Maps. Actually, KML was developed for Google Earth. Think of KML as a bookmark for a certain position in a map.
Unlike Google Earth though were all surfaces are covered, Google Moon can only show you the landing points of all the Apollo spacecrafts. All the same, with coder Royale's bug fix, you can kiss those viewing problems away.
For the complete instructions on how to install PSP-Maps version 1.1, please refer to the readme attached to the file. Remember, safety first! Also, you can check dev Royale's site over at the via link. The source code, a wishlist of future features and a tutorial can be found there.

Wondering what other homebrews were spotted over at the ongoing PSP-Hacks competition?
For one, there's the latest builld of Royale's PSP Maps application, which allows you to view Google Maps, Virtual Earth and Yahoo Maps from your Sony handheld.
Aside from those online services, version 1.0 now also carries support for Google Moon, Google Mars and Google Sky. As for the rest of the new changes (Quoting the readme):
- added GP2X version;
- added Google Moon, Google Mars and Google Sky support; if you find the “cheat” code, you can enable these;
- fixed Google Terrain view;
- new splash screen for the PSP-Hacks competition with sound.
Further installation and usage details for PSP Maps are available in the file bundle's readme.
v0.7 · Mar 29, 2008
If you're a constant globetrotter, or if you simply want to know more about the world around you, then homebrew developer Royale's little app, PSP-Maps, should be right up your alley. Pretty much a map-reader that retrieves satellite images directly from Google Maps, PSP-Maps is handy for all your map-reading needs on the go. Let's check out what's changed from the last version.
version 0.7 (2008-03-29)
- added Windows version to the release
- added Google Maps and Yahoo Maps! hybrid views
- added Virtual Earth hill view
- added a list of available views in the menu
- new icon and screenshot
- joystick should be less sensitive and more precise
- added optional on-screen informations (lat/lon/zoom/view)
- geocoding now uses maps.google.com (and not .fr)
- load balancing between Google Maps server)
- menu updated (smaller font, nicer coding)
- readme file was updated
Certainly a very meaty changelog! From additions like the Windows version and the Virtual Earth hill view, to an adjustment of the joystick's sensitivity and precision, this version should justify its place on your memory stick. As always, please read up on the readme file bundled in the archive in case you're puzzled as to the usage or installation of PSP-Maps.
v0.6 · Mar 21, 2008
PSP Homebrew developer Royale has released a new build for the PSP-Maps application. If you aren't familiar with PSP-Maps, it's a map-reader that allows the Sony handheld to retrieve maps directly from Google Earth.
In honor of the 2008 NEO Spring coding contest 2008, PSP-Maps v0.6 has a brand new splash screen. The new build also has three more improvements to the program. Here is the change log for PSP-Maps v0.6:

- added an image to help zoom in (show/hide with button O)
- updated the Makefile to remove old version number
Users are advised to take a look at the readme before installing the program.
v0.5 · Mar 19, 2008
Homebrew developer Royale just released a new build for the PSP-Maps application, bumping it up to version 0.5. This progra, is actually a map reader for the Sony handheld that was patterned after Google Maps.
Despite that similarity, this homebrew release does not use the API from Google Maps. Aside from the obvious simpler user-interface, Royale also mentioned that his program retrieves the images directly. Here are the changes for this specific build:
- Added Virtual Earth and Yahoo! Maps support (thanks to boomerang for the idea)
- Address search menu
- Customizable cache size
- Added an option to load neighborhood to cache
- Switched to TTF font
- Fixed a bug with favorites
- New buttons mapping
The download package below for PSP-Maps v0.5 comes with several documentation that should help you get started with this program. Be sure to read those first to maximize the potential of this great application.
v03 · Mar 13, 2008
It appears that Royale's been keeping close tabs on user comments for the PSP-Maps homebrew. The developer has recently released the third build of this Google Map-style application, which introduces some handy new features that you should enjoy:
- A menu...
- ... from where you can load/save favorites!
- Some nicer effects (zoom/unzoom, fade in/out, scrolling).
- Removed the ugly splash screen Very Happy
As aa recap, PSP-Maps will enable users to view maps very much in the styling of the Google Maps application on your PC. The difference is that PSP-Maps doesn't use the Google Maps API, and downloads its images directly.
Further details on this app such as installation and its controls are available in the file bundle's readme. Enjoy the download, and be sure to provide Royale your feedback on PSP-Maps if you think it could stand for more tweaks.
v0.1 · Mar 2, 2008
We've had so many homebrew applications in the past that provide us with map programs for the Sony PlayStation Portable. If those didn't the trick for you, then may this next one from coder Royale will do.
The coder, known for his Chromium PSP port has ported Google Maps to the Sony handheld. However, note that he interface was made simpler and that the program doesn't utilize the Google Maps API.
Instead, PSP-Maps retrieves the images directly. The program is currently on version 0.1 and as such, there are some bugs found in the code like it is only capable of using the first WiFi connection.
PSP-Maps v0.1 comes with its own Readme.txt file which should provide you with further help. Also, you may want to refer to the source link below for more details.
