v2.9 · Jan 29, 2007
We won't be blaming you if you're not quite comfortable yet with PSP Filer. The developer is Japanese and even we, here, are having a hard time deciphering each release's detail. Anyway, Mediumgauge recently updated the application and as far as we are concerned, the few changes implemented are highly important.
To those of you who are reading about this for the first time, PSP Filer is actually a file management program. If it helps you, it can be likened to File Assistant and can be taken as an alternative. But if you have been following PSP Filer's development during the last few months, we guess you'll agree with us that this one is much better.
The changelog of the PSP Filer v2.9 is included below. Please be careful when trying out this one because Mediumgauge himself warns that this might cause severe damage to your PSP by your mis-operation or by bugs the Filer itself might have. To those of you who are brave and in-the-know enough, an English version of the readme file is included in the download.
v2.8 · Jan 24, 2007

Just in case this is the first time you're reading about it (which we find quite impossible to believe), PSP Filer is a file management program for the PSP which is pretty much like File Assistant.
Now, sadly the readme file and the changelog text file is all in Japanese, so we had to look really hard to be able to dish out a usable and understandable changelog. So after sifting through the Japanese changelog, we were able to find some tidbits that we'll be of help to you. With that, let's go over the changelog for v2.8
Changelog for version 2.8:
- General:

o filer will skip to backup flash image when there is not enough space in MS Duo.

v2.5 · Jan 6, 2007
MediumGuage has been at it again trying to create one of the best PSP homebrew file management applications by releasing yet another version of the popular File Assistant alternative, his second release in just under a week. After a bit of patience with a painstaking Japanese changelog we have managed to find out what has changed for PSP Filer v2.5, and we think you're gonna like it. The last release was pretty major with a lot of changes made to the UMD ripping function and version 2.5 is not different. Here's the changelog:
UMD ripping:
- UMD ripping shows estimated remaining time
File management:
- Shows empty space in flash devices
- Added displayed information of devices
- Cluster structural check
Binary Viewer:
- File is attempted to be displayed even while it is still entering into memory
The addition of the utility which shows the amount of space in flash devices should prove useful for those running a version of a custom firmware such as Dark_Alex's latest 3.03 OE-A firmware release to let you know how much space you have left on your PSP's flash chip. Remember though, if the application runs in Japanese language just press select and then O to change it to English.
v2.4 · Jan 2, 2007
After having several people look at the changes (written in Japanese), I have finally obtained a usable translation of this new PSP Filer release from our not-to-distant developer Mediumgauge. PSP Filer is a file management program for the PSP like File Assistant but boosts some features that File Assistant does not. This program is slowly receiving gradual updates to its overall support and features and is currently a very stable program, one of which was used in a recent development over file assistant (as it was not compatible). This new version boosts the following changes (Thanks CrUmp for the translation) -
- The UMD ripping speed has been improved.
- Fixed the bug which hangs system when the UMD ripping is canceled.
- Displays UMD ripping speed in detail.
- Displays the media recognition procedure and the messages at the UMD ripping moment.
v2.2 · Dec 25, 2006
For fans of Mediumgauge's work, here's a heads up as he has just released a small update to his homebrew application, PSP Filer. Now at v2.2, he notes the following changes in his log which is dated December 25:
- UMD ripping speed is improved.
- Entry speed to memory stick is improved.
For those who are unfamiliar with this app, it basically allows one to view files from your memory stick as well as play .wav and mp3 files. It also allows you to rename files as well as move them around. At the moment, this app can be installed on FW 1.0 and 1.5, so if you're unsure about how this works, just check out some of our older articles about PSP Filer and if you know someone who can read Japanese, then feel free to check out the readme file which Mediumgauge has included.
v2.0 · Dec 21, 2006
Mediumgauge has just released v2.0 for his known homebrew app, PSP Filer. If this is your first time to encounter this app, you might wanna check out our previous posts about it, but basically, what it does is that it lets you view files from your memory stick, play .wav and mp3-formatted files, modify file names, etc. That said, here's the list of stuff that's changed in v2.0:
Changelog:
- cancel operation added
- RAMDISK memory leak fixed
- limit of 1024 files in RAMDISK removed
- UMD directory access attempted
- when a file is copied to RAMDISK, file marks should be cancelled
- you can now move files from RAMDISK
v1.9 · Dec 11, 2006
If you've been wondering what to do if you felt like messing around with your files, don't fret! Mediumgauge has come out with v1.9+ of his file management app known as PSP Filer.
PSP Filer v1.9+ lets you do everything from playing back wav and mp3 files, modifying file names, and even verify the contents of your files. Now, our Japanese is spotty, and the online language translators are acting up with weird translations, so we'll try and give you a (somewhat badly) translated list of new things that have shown up in this version of the app. Please pardon our troubles with interpretation.
As with many homebrew apps, and especially this one, which needs translation, please make sure you know what you're doing or you might accidentally rename something important while using it, or have a messy install process that can bog up your PSP. If you happen to know Japanese, a faithful translation of the site and the readme would be much appreciated.
Filer Changes:
- HACKER MODE was improved.
o Old: L, the folder of the name compilation
Text Viewer:
- Fixed bug that cuts "line in the middle of full size letter" in long pieces of Japanese text.
- Fixed bug that occurs when you start application with insufficient memory.
v1.3 · Aug 18, 2006
Mediumguage has once again updated his simple File Browser for the PSP, updating it to version 1.3 with a host of new features just for you! With the amount of updates this program has had, it's begining to take my fancy over old time favourite File Browser, FileAssistant. Here's the changelog:
- Added binary/text reader
- Added WAV and MP3 playback
- BMP, JPG and PNG photo viewer added
This little application is great for renaming or viewing files on your PSP memory stick, and now listening to music and viewing pictures aswell as background support which was added in version 1.2.
v1.2 · Aug 16, 2006
Mediumguage has once again updated his simple File browser homebrew application for the PSP titled PSP Filer. The major addition for version 1.2 is the abiity to set a wallpaper when using the program to get rid of the crude black background we have seen in previous releases. You'll have to bear with us as far as a changelog goes because unfortunately I am not fluent in Japanese and so an interpretation of the Google translation is the best we can get. Here it is:
- Wallpaper support was added. When either wallpaper.bmp, wallpaper.jpg or wallpaper.png is present in the same location as the EBOOT.PBP, the wallpaper will appear in the background
- Picture viewer wallpaper retention performance was added. During picture indicating when the START+? button is pushed, it retains in the same position as EBOOT.PBP the picture which is in the midst of indicating as a wallpaper file wallpaper.bmp. I think this means that by pressing Start + ? you can set a picture as the background, but I am not 100% sure.
With the sheer volume of files on PSPs these days you can never get enough file browsers, and now that PSP Filer has the wallpaper function it's definitly one of the best looking out there - depending on your wallpaper of course!
v1.0 · Aug 8, 2006
Mediumgauge added yet another version to his homebrew, PSP Filer - v1.0. PSP Filer is a simple file browser for PSP. The read me file on his site is written in what appears to be ancient text and this is what we made out of the crude English translation:
- When drawing up the new folder on English mode, the bug where menu message has been made with Japanese was corrected. With only ver0.9+ it had appeared, “being able to select the paste the bug which finishes was corrected with file operation on RAMDISK”. Also corrected: “when the paste doing the file from RAMDISK, the bug where time stamp is not taken over”.
- Locomotive function of the file was added.
This may not appear to be too much, but since this app just seems to get better and better every release, we bet the same goes for v1.0. For a complete update of PSP Filer from v.0.1 all the way to v0.8, just click right here.
v0.9 · Jun 30, 2006
Mediumgauge, developer of the homebrew file browser for the PSP, released the latest update : PSP Filer v0.9. Mediumgauge's site is written in some funky language but have no fear. QJ's own cunning linguist, Jeff Chen, translated it for the rest of us.
PSP Filer v0.9 Changelog:
Overall
- Fixed the memory saving algorithm. It's now possible to display images even with little free memory (available when dealing with some large images or various files on the Ramdisk)
- Added the playback function for WAV (uncompressed format only) files
Filer
- Fixed the bug when renaming a file in the ramdisk, there can be 2 files with the same name
Image Viewer
- When you zoom in/out the image with L/R button, the datum mark will be the center of the screen
In case you need info on PSP Filer (the read me file is also written in what appears on our monitor as Ancient Babylonian) we have more details about PSP Filer from v.0.1 all the way to v0.8 right here.
