v0.4 · Jun 5, 2008
Sometimes it can get quite bothersome having to drag a newspaper everywhere you go just so that you can keep up with current events. Thankfully, developer The Underminer (Nino van Hooff) was able to come up with a neat PlayStation Portable homebrew app, which wraps up all the important information you'll ever need off the 'Net into convenient, bite-sized RSS feeds.
The latest build, version 0.4, now supports full integration with http 1.1 and is now more stable due to the reusing of connections. For more details on the other changes implemented since our previous coverage of PReSS, you can check out the latest changelog taken from the app's Readme.txt file:
version 0.4 - 31 May 2008
- full integration of http 1.1
- More stable due to reuse of connections
- speed up through higher cpu speed. To compensate; the speed is lowered when idle.
- The playing song now displays at the bottom of the screen
- 2 major bugs fixed,
- and some minor ones
The developer noted that there are still a couple of bugs that need to be worked out. For instance, unsupported characters and dropped spaces found on some speeds can literally screw up the formatting of the application.
Also, any corrupt images loaded tend to lock up your PSP. If this is the case, just reboot your handheld and restart the program from the XMB. Hopefully, these issues will be resolved in future releases of PReSS.
For more information regarding the installation process and the program's different controls, please read the documentation included in the file bundle.
v0.31 · Apr 27, 2008
The Underminer is back and he brings along with him the latest version of his homebrew PReSS, bumping it up to v0.31.
For this installation, he's added some more tweaks to the project, changing the button configuration and adding the most requested feature that is the capability to add your own feeds. Hooray for those who have been clamoring for this!
He explains that this addition basically works like suggesting feeds for public catalogue, except that your feeds will be appearing in the 'Personal' category of the selected language.
As for the known bugs, he lists them down as the following:
- Unsupported characters
o Some characters can not be displayed properly, and instead are rendered like a box.
- Dropped spaces
o For some feeds; the spaces around links (wich are converted to plain text) are lost
- When a corrupted image is loaded; the PSP freezes.
o Your PSP is NOT bricked, you can hold up the power switch for 10 seconds to shut down the PSP, and then flick it up to reboot to the XMB
And for the changelog:
- Unlocked unlimited sized mp3's for playback
- fixed scroll-bar in catalogue
- fixed updating feature
- some minor things
Anyhow, do enjoy this new version of PReSS, and please do not forget to check out the readme for proper guidance.
v0.3 · Apr 21, 2008
Bring your RSS feeds with you wherever you go with homebrew developer The Underminer's PReSS version 0.3. Improving on its previous build, PReSS now offers support for Sony PlayStation Portable Slim users. Not only that, you can also download and play mp3 and mp4 files too.
Coder The Underminer is already planning speed-up revisions for Version 1.0. But let's not get ahead of ourselves for that future build. Today's version 0.3 update features a boatload of fixes, improvements and additions. Here's the complete changelog from The Underminer:
- Slim support
- WPA and other encryption support
- personal feed catalogue
- mp3 download and playback
- mp4 and AVC video download
- atom/xml support added
- more reliable: http 1.1 protocol for image download
- ability to abort updating feeds
- faster feed saving
- remapped buttons (see read-me)
- support for larger images
- Real favicons instead of generic logo.
- faster panning in image view
- viewfinder in image view
- show/hide topics window
- Added to settings: Large thumbnail quality
- 0 = display image as a link
- 1-3 = image quality(only applicable for large images)
The Underminer warns us to "only use the home button when the select button is unresponsive." This is because the home button will exit PReSS without saving changes. For the complete instructions on how to install PReSS, visit the readme before anything else. Safety first!
v0.2 · Jan 15, 2008
A new version is out for PReSS from The Underminer. For those of you who missed out on the initial release of the application, PReSS is a homebrew program that allows users to download and read RSS feeds.
PReSS is now on its second release. Version 0.2 has a lot of new features, but please note that the first version of PReSS isn't compatible with the new build. Before you install version 0.2, please delete the PReSS data and PReSS folders from your unit.
Here is the changelog for PReSS version 0.2:
- Image full screen - Handy for comics or another way of browsing topics
- Added Newly Added category under catalogue
- Add links to browser bookmarks
- Auto-update
- Font size
- Hide feed view
- Feed update combo
- Next unread combo
- Faster saving/loading feeds
- Fixed leftmost pixel column bug: the leftmost column is simply not blitted anymore, which would display improperly sometimes
- Added activity indicator for feed download: if it doesn't move for 5 seconds; it never will
- Parallel feed downloading cuts waiting time
- Improved unreadable character replacement
Users are advised to check out the readme for known installation and troubleshooting procedures, as well as known bugs in the program.
v0.1 · Nov 10, 2007
PlayStation Portable homebrew developer The Underminer gave us a heads up for a new release, called PReSS. It stands for Portable RSS and it was inspired by Sony's RSS Channel feature that first appeared back in firmware 2.60.
According to The Underminer, the RSS Channel was kind of disappointing as it only plays "the audio attachments" instead of a "full-fledged rss-reader." PReSS basically allows users to download RSS feeds and read them at your pleasure. Talk about news on the go, right?
This is PReSS' initial release (version version 0.1) but it already has sweet features such as compatibility with all RSS versions (except Atom and RDF), WEP Wi-Fi connection support, built-in catalogues, and topic expiring (meaning old news automatically deleted and you can set the expiration amount). It also sports GIF, PNG and JPEG support, plus it resizes images to fit the window and it is fully skinnable.
The Underminer had some reminders for users: "I want to stress that the home button should only be used to exit the app in case of a crash; because changes won't be saved. Use select instead."
Anyway, check out the download below. The Readme includes important information so be sure to go through it before anything else.
