v0.5 · Mar 20, 2008

If you've been keeping up with this year's Neoflash Spring Competition, then here's two more entries that should get your mouth watering: the very excellent Polygunwars from ahrimanes, and the very quirky Nikwi Deluxe from deniska. Let's check out both homebrew titles and see what they have to offer in terms of originality, playability, and all-around awesome factor.

So, first off, Polygunwars. A clone of the very addictive and very exciting Geometry Wars, this one sports the same funky neon graphics, the same trippy explosions and music. It's pretty much a very awesome clone of a very awesome shooter, and it definitely plays well.

Here's the changelog for version 0.5:

  • recoding of the enemy system for the seek of optimization
  • you will experience a better movement of the elements
  • bullet system has been modified to fell like we really play in an analog.
  • if you press TRIANGLE 0º,CIRCLE 90º. the bullet system will shoot some bullets in 25º and 36º to fill that range.
  • all GFX totally redrawn (learned to make them glow, thanks youtube.)
  • when you get killed you can see who kill you.
  • new FX for the BOOM(press L)
  • now we have Geometry wars sound track.
  • now we have Geometry wars SFX.
  • new enemys: Red blackhole, pinkbox, pinkyboxy, blueseeker.

Next up is Nikwi, a platformer that's as simple as it is cute. Players step into the shoes of 9-year-old Nikwi, a 9-year-old boy with a penchant for jumping and candy. Guide him through thirty candy-filled levels, but be warned - there will be monsters to make your dream a living nightmare. So be sure to nab those treats before they come and get you.

If you're puzzled as to how to install or play these two gems, then all the answers you need are in the readme files bundled in the downloadable archives, so be sure to give them a look through. Enjoy!

v0.4 · Dec 29, 2007

Homebrew developer ahrimanes dropped by the QJ.NET PSP Homebrew Development Forums to release a new version of his addictive space shooter, POLYGUNWARS. Similar to Geometry Wars, this homebrew game for the Sony PlayStation Portable is all about shooting down relentless waves of enemies.

Since its earlier builds, POLYGUNWARS version 0.4 received a variety of new features. Your score now appears on the upper left corner while the score to beat is on the right, spawns aren't random anymore, and the collision system has been improved. Developer ahrimanes also optimized the game with better performance of meshes and particles.

POLYGUNWARS' previous releases tweaked the game's balance to make battles more hectic and fun. From the looks of it, ahrimanes will be working on future updates.

v0.1 · Nov 9, 2007

PSP homebrew developer ahrimanes has released Polygunwars v0.1, a new take on Bizarre Creations' popular Xbox shooter Geometry Wars. Polygunwars is very reminiscent of 71M's PSP homebrew game Trigonometry Wars, since both are based on the same game.

What sets it apart are better overall effects and brighter colors. Controls are easy: the analog stick moves the ship while the triangle, X, square and O buttons fire up, down, left and right, respectively. Polygunwars was made using JGE++, dr_watson's hardware-accelerated 2D game SDK for the Sony PlayStation Portable.

This homebrew game is for PSPs running firmware 3.xx. This version of Polygunwars is still a beta, so if you have any bug reports or suggestions, feel free to tell ahrimanes at the QJ.NET PSP Development forums.
