Moonlight PSP changelog
v1.5 · Oct 5, 2026
Highlights
- Application Startup: Loads the bundled Media Engine helper on XMB launch and initializes hardware AVC. Initialization failures show a readable error code.
- Sony Hardware AVC Decoding: H.264 streams use the PSP's AVC hardware, with automatic CAVLC/Baseline and CABAC/Main selection from the stream.
- Video Presentation: Improved video receive, frame buffering, color range, cropping and presentation. Fast-moving details and small text can still appear soft or blocky within the PSP's display and Wi-Fi limits; see Known Issues.
- Audio Playback: Corrected playback timing across silence, held audio and queue adjustments.
- Reliable Controls: Improved keyboard, mouse wheel, button and controller delivery, with visible analog mapping hints and local HUD controls.
- Stream Exit: Improved decoder reopening, stream teardown and application resource cleanup.
- Balanced Default: New installations start at 360x204, 20 fps and 480 kbps with audio enabled. Quality remains native 480x272 at 15 fps; Performance uses 300x170 at 30 fps with audio disabled. Upgrades retain saved settings.
Installation
- Copy both files to
ms0:/PSP/GAME/Moonlight/, or any custom folder underms0:/PSP/GAME/. - Both
EBOOT.PBPandmoonlight_me_helper.prxmust be in the same directory. - Requires custom firmware; ARK-4 on 6.60/6.61 is the supported target.
- Host must run Sunshine or Apollo, configured for H.264. Connect the PSP to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi.
v1.4 · Jul 20, 2026
Highlights
- H.264 CABAC Playback: Full hardware-accelerated decode compatibility on the client. Added a 3-slot RGBA ring buffer and zero-copy presentation pointer holding to achieve stutter-free, high-performance CABAC playback.
- Dynamic Helper Path Resolution: Extracted absolute directory path dynamically from argv[0] at startup, enabling moonlight_me_helper.prx to load successfully regardless of the homebrew folder name.
- Teardown & Clean Return: Streamlined exit teardown sequences and restored KillME hardware reset on stream exit. Re-integrated wifi_disconnect, ui_manager_shutdown, and display_shutdown calls on XMB/HOME exit to prevent black-screen hangs and reboots.
- Wi-Fi Setup Back-Navigation: Added support for back-navigation from the built-in Wi-Fi dialog. Pressing Back (Cancel) in the Wi-Fi dialog returns the user cleanly to the settings menu instead of triggering a fatal error halt.
- Intra-Refresh Restoration: Restored intra-refresh by default to eliminate burst network packet loss and prevent IDR wait stalls.
- Upstream Compiler Isolation: Resolved compilation conflicts in the new PSPSDK toolchain's pthreads by introducing local header shims for OpenH264.
- Makefile Parallelization: Fixed Makefile race conditions for stable parallel builds (\make -j\).
Installation
v1.3 · May 29, 2026
PSP Moonlight v1.3 release.
Highlights
- Runtime data now lives under
ms0:/PSP/SAVEDATA/Moonlight/so settings, pairing identity, logs, TLS pins, icon cache, and temporary files no longer clutter the Memory Stick root or the XMB app folder. - Remote/hotspot launches keep using the selected public IP when Sunshine returns a private LAN address in the RTSP session URL.
- Pairing now persists the paired host after authenticated pairing succeeds, including manual public-IP pairing paths.
- HOME/XMB exit now runs the full cleanup path to avoid hanging on the grey "Please wait" screen after returning from a stream.
- The EBOOT includes PSP-safe XMB icon and background artwork.
Updating from older builds
If you are updating, you can delete stale old-build Moonlight files/folders before copying v1.3. Do not delete ms0:/ itself; remove only old Moonlight files/folders if present.
Common cleanup targets:
ms0:/moonlight/- old root-level Moonlight logs/dumps such as
ms0:/moonlight.log,ms0:/moonlight_debug.log,ms0:/diag.log,ms0:/net.log,ms0:/applist_dump.xml,ms0:/raw_dump.h264, andms0:/idr_dump.h264 - the old install folder
ms0:/PSP/GAME/Moonlight/before recreating it for v1.3
After cleanup, copy EBOOT.PBP and moonlight_me_helper.prx into ms0:/PSP/GAME/Moonlight/, then pair again in Sunshine. v1.3 creates its new runtime data under ms0:/PSP/SAVEDATA/Moonlight/.
Encoder Settings Guides
Docs for tuning Sunshine per GPU vendor remain important for PSP compatibility:
- [AMD (AMF)](docs/AMD_SETTINGS_GUIDE.md)
- [NVIDIA (NVENC)](docs/NVENC_SETTINGS_GUIDE.md)
- [Intel (QSV)](docs/QSV_SETTINGS_GUIDE.md)
- [Software (x264)](docs/SOFTWARE_ENCODING_GUIDE.md)
The PSP software H.264 decoder is very constrained. Wrong encoder settings on the host can still cause failed streams, visual corruption, or frame drops.
Installation
- Extract both files to
ms0:/PSP/GAME/Moonlight/. - Both
EBOOT.PBPandmoonlight_me_helper.prxmust be in the same directory. - Requires custom firmware.
- Host must run Sunshine.

v1.2 · May 18, 2026
PSP Moonlight v1.2 release.
Three PSP-focused presets are now built into the settings menu:
Performance: 300x170 at 30 fps, 384 kbps, 1056-byte packets, audio disabled by default.
Balanced: 360x204 at 20 fps, 480 kbps, 1200-byte packets, audio enabled.
Quality: 480x272 at 10 fps, 576 kbps, 1200-byte packets, native PSP resolution, audio enabled.
Encoder Settings Guides
Docs for tuning Sunshine per GPU vendor — critical for PSP compatibility:
- [AMD (AMF)](docs/AMD_SETTINGS_GUIDE.md) — 13 settings with Web UI locations and recommended values
- [NVIDIA (NVENC)](docs/NVENC_SETTINGS_GUIDE.md) — 8 settings covering presets, rate control, and AQ
- [Intel (QSV)](docs/QSV_SETTINGS_GUIDE.md) — 3 settings with generation-specific notes
- [Software (x264)](docs/SOFTWARE_ENCODING_GUIDE.md) — CPU fallback preset and tune options
These guides matter because the PSP's software H.264 decoder is extremely constrained — wrong encoder settings on the host will cause failed streams, visual corruption, or massive frame drops. The guides explain which settings work and why.
Installation
- Extract both files to \\ms0:/PSP/GAME/Moonlight/\\
- Both \\EBOOT.PBP\\ and \\moonlight_me_helper.prx\\ must be in the same directory
- Requires custom firmware
- Host must run Sunshine on the same LAN

v1.1 · May 6, 2026
v1.1 release highlights:
- Network controller refinements: transport-first quality classification, direct launch bitrate usage, and updated RTCP RR accounting.
- Documentation refresh for v1.1 release wording and ARK-4-first guidance.
- Retail (non-dev) artifacts published manually.

Why manual artifacts:
CI currently uses a different PSPSDK/toolchain than the validated local release environment, which produces non-reproducible release binaries for this branch. To match tested hardware output, v1.1 artifacts are published from the validated local retail build.
