Audio Mechanica changelog
v8d · Feb 9, 2009
from Art:Hi Guys,This is the latest release of my digital audio recorder program which happens to be a complete rewrite. Most of the functionality of the older versions has now been written into this version. You need either a Socom compatible headset with PSP headphone remote control, a Go!Cam (Chotto Cam),or a Talkman USB microphone to provide the PSP with compatible hardware for this program to work. There are numerous modifications to tap a microphone input out of your remote, or find a 4 conductor3.5mm jack, and convert your own standard PC microphone headset, or, as I have done, convert a mobilephone headset for use with the PSP. Details of these mods are posted on PSPU forums, and ps2dev.org forums. In my experience, mobile phone (and DIY) headsets don't have the same quality of the original PSP headset. On the other hand, for line input , use a stock Ipod Video cable with three RCA connectors on one end,and the four conductor 3.5mm plug on the other end. When the Ipod video cable is connected to the PSP remote, the Yellow RCA plug becomes the PSP input, and the red and white RCA plugs are the Left and Right PSP output channels.WARNING: Be careful with the level present at the PSP unit's input. Start at low volume and work your way up.Do not use a level that results in distortion at the output. Most component equipment with line leveloutputs will not be suitable because their output level is too high, and cannot be adjusted. Many DigitalTV set top boxes do provide for adjusting the volume of their line level outputs. I have tested the programwith one of these. It is not recommended to connect the PSP to recieve signal from in car audio equipment.Version History:Audio Mechanica V8d (27/11/08), Released 07/02/09:Program now checks for music folder in the root directory, and creates it if it does not existso that the program works with Memory Sticks that are formatted by older firmware versions.Updated to Peb's latest OSK library so the onscreen keyboard language matches the PSP settings.

Homebrew Developer Art has come out with a new version of Audio Mechanica, the digital audio recorder for the PSP. This latest version is a recompilation of the previous version which let the program run at a lower clock speed at 133/133/1 to save on battery power.
Here are notes from Art from his forum post and the changelog for the application for Audio Mechanica v6e:
- Recompiled with the PSP clock still running 133/133/1.
- This one has Mikmod left in it.
- Hopefully works on the later firmwares.
Note that the program currently only works for PSP Phats. Please go through the readme for more details and program operation instructions.

We have to say that this next homebrew application came as a surprise to us here at QJ.NET because the last update to it was done by developer Art back in October 2006. What we are talking about is Audio Mechanica which basically records your voice through a PSP-compatible microphone.
After recording your voice, it then saves it as a .WAV file that can be played back using Windows Media Player. One of the major updates to Audio Mechanica v6d is the lowered clock speed so that it saves battery life. The program now runs at 133/133/1 by default. Here are the other changes as provided by Art:
- The Digital Delay Processor can delay an audio channel by a user defined value. This could save on a stand alone piece of equipment that does the same job.
- The Yakback Emulator uses voice activation routines to record continuous chunks of sound, and auto playback each continuous sound chunk. This works rather like a parrot, repeating everything you say after each pause (repeating everything you say after each pause).
- The Yakback Emulator is the beginnings of the way I'd go about a speech regognition, or lie detection program.
- The Virtual Tape Recorder mode works as the previous digital recorder.
- The Voice Activation mode works as the Virtual Tape Recorder, with the addition of an adjustable sound activation level that can make the recorder work like a dictophone, only recording segments of continuous sound.
Don't forget to browse through the Readme.txt file before installing this program on your PSP units to avoid any untoward incidents. and better yet, you can click on our forum link below to discuss it with other users.

The hard working Art s has once again updated his Audio Mechanica audio recording application, originally known as Virtual Tape Recorder, to version 6c today. This application can record your voice input via a PSP-compatible microphone such as the SOCOM headset or Art's Nokia Boom Headset modification, and then save it as a Microsoft-compliant wave file for playback in Windows Media Player. You may remember that Art changed the name of this application back at version 6 because he thought that it was more of a digital recorder than a tape recorder. Here's whats been added since that version:
Audio Mechanica V6c:
- Right and Left shoulder buttons can now be used to adjust delay time while in echo mode faster than pressing
- up and down on the D pad. Use of the shoulder buttons lifts the previous restriction on delay time, and allows
- full use of the 22Mb data buffer to provide up to 4 minutes and 21 seconds of delay time.
- Added an Echo mode to the Digital Delay Processor.
- Fixed seek function (left and right shoulder buttons) to seek at the same speed for every sample rate.
- Reel Position is now displayed in elapsed minutes and seconds for all screens.
- Delay time for the Delay Processor mode is now displayed in seconds and miliseconds.
- Various fixes, and significant code optimisation.
Audio Mechanica V6b:
- Minor screen bug fixes.
Remember, you can find the instructions on how to use this application in the readme.txt included in the download and feel free to add any suggestions or feeback to art in the QJ forums. See you tomorrow for another Audio Mechanica update!

Art comes back to us at the QJ forums with another 'brew version of his Virtual Tape Recorder. It's now called Audio Mechanica and it's actually an updated version of Virtual Tape Recorder v5b. He renamed it thus since there are two new features that don't have much to do with the tape recorder. The two new features are:
- The Digital Delay Processor - can delay an audio channel by a user defined value. This could save on a stand alone piece of equipment that does the same job.
- The Yakback Emulator- uses voice activation routines to record continuous chunks of sound, and auto playback each continuous sound chunk. This works rather like a parrot, repeating everything you say after each pause. In fact, this feature is the beginnings of possible speech recognition features or lie detection program incorporated in the 'brew in the future versions.
Otherwise, the Virtual Tape Recorder and the Voice Activation modes work as they do in the previous versions. To get the 'brew going in your PSP, follow these instructions:
- Copy the two 'Audio_Mechanica' folders into your PSP/GAME directory, and be sure there is at least 20Mb free on your Memory Stick. Although the application itself is small, a 20Mb "Reel.wav" file will be created in the program directory when the program is first launched.
- Plug in your Headphone remote, and Socom compatible headset, then when you launch the program, and the Reel.dat file is created on your Memory Stick, you are presented with a screen that contains some display data in green that indicates the recorder is initialy started in playback mode.
- Use D pad up and down to cycle program modes between Tape Recorder mode, Voice activation mode, Demo Effect modes, Yakback Emulator mode, and Echo Processor mode.
- To adjust the audio bitrate (and recording time) press sideways on the D pad while in a recorder mode.
- To toggle between Record and Playback modes, press Triangle while playing or recording is stopped. Red text will indicate that the recorder is in record mode. The Digital Delay Processor, and Yakback Emulator modes both force recording mode to be active for their operation.
- To start or stop recording or playback, or to start the selected effect mode, press Cross. Recording or Playback is started from the current reel position displayed in data words, and also expressed in Megabytes (0 - 22 Mb). The virtual tape Reel will auto loop if it reaches the upper limit during playback, and will auto stop if a recording is allowed to reach the end of the reel while in Tape Recorder, or Voice Activation mode.
- To Fast Foward or Rewind the reel position press the Left or Right Shoulder buttons. The virtual tape Reel will auto loop if it reaches the upper or lower limit unless playing. Fast foward and Rewind functions do not work while recording.
- To reset the index position press Square while in stop mode.
- To erase the reel in RAM, and delete the reel.wav file, press Play on the headphone remote while holding down the Square button on the PSP unit.
- Press Circle to exit the program. A prompt will then provide the option to save changes to the reel.
- Headphone remote buttons duplicate some of these features. See the included diagram.
